Procurement and Management of Archaeological mitigation investigation
Following the grant of panning permission for the construction of a 50MW solar farm on c.95ha of land, plus an associated cable connection GHC was commissioned to agree the scope of archaeological mitigation required, tender those works to a range of contractors and manage the subsequent fieldwork. Pre-determination investigations had confirmed that the site contains extensive archaeological remains, predominantly relating to Bronze Age enclosures, which were likely subject to seasonal occupation. The largest challenge in this work, as with most solar farms, has been to convince the local authority that the impacts of solar development (typically less than 1% of the site area) require a very different approach to mitigation than that which would apply to standard development, such as a residential scheme.
